THE HANGING OF ELENA DELAFOY

Claxon, February 25th 2009

           "Dear Mum,

These are the last words I can write.
In few minutes the guards will knock at the door of my cell,
they will take me in a lift, they will lead me through long
corridors, until the gallows room.
Mum, I beg your pardon and I ask forgiveness from the family
of the man I killed. I'm only in pain for you, I'm already
in peace. The sentence was right, I killed a man, a policeman
who was doing his duty. That's why I must die! See how I can
say it calmly? I, Elena Delafoy, I am sane. The judges have
established it. I can distinguish between good and evil,
therefore I'm dangerous, so dangerous that I'm irredeemable.
Therefore I must die. It is established by Law. What a strange
feeling I'm pervaded with! I'm one of the few people who knows
exactly what time her death is. Noon. Twelve o' clock.
Should I go mad? Well no! It's like this is happening to another
woman. Mum, you know I've not always been like that. Dangerous?
Irredeemable? You know that a man came suddently into my life and
that this man changed my destiny. He came to me with a cigarette
pack in his hands. Mareshial cigarettes. Those cigarettes looked
so innocent! There's nothing innocent in him. He kept saying that
he loved me, that it was for my own sake, so I started smoking
Mareshial.
Unfortunately only after I realized that those cigarettes were
filled with a powerful psychotropic drug, which could  cancel your
will. He cheated me, he used me, he ordered me to murder that
policeman while I was under the effect of that drug. He wanted to
take his vengeance on the man who arrested him for drug dealing some
years ago.
You asked me so many times who he was. I've never told his name to
anybody, neither during the trial, neither to you.
I'm sure you wonder why. Yes, it's true, I could have my life saved,
but I didn't do it because I loved him. Mum, believe me, I truly
loved him and maybe, in spite of that all, I still love him.
That's why I forgave him. His name is Philippe. Now that you know that,
please forget it. My dear mum, I'd like to tell you so many things,
but I hear some steps. They're the guards coming. Now I really have to
leave you. Please don't cry for me, but I beg you for the very last time,
forgive me.

Farewell forever.
Yours Elena."

THE HANGING

The girl is in the execution room

-Elena Delafoy, you've been found guilty of the voluntary manslaughter of
Jean Laforet, policeman of the seventh city district. Therefore this Court
of Justice charges you with death row, which will be executed by hanging at
the gallows. Because of the peculiar circumstances of your crime, aggravated
by the use of drugs, the commutation of sentence has been rejected.
This is what I'm now ordered to communicate by the Law.

-Elena Delafoy, I communicate you that we haven't received any phone call which
 ordered the suspension of execution.

-I am sorry, your time is over now.
-Activate the hatch! Now!

The trap door wide opens and a dull thud breaks in the room

 Her body hangs lifeless
